A house decorated with pumpkins for fall.

How to Prepare Your Plumbing for Fall

Fall is officially here! It’s the time of year where the leaves are falling in your yard and weekends are spent pumpkin picking with your family. While fall is full of fun activities, the fun can be cut short when you run into issues with your home’s plumbing system. As the seasons change, it’s also time to make some changes around your house to ensure you’re comfortable as the weather gets cooler.

Before you set the pumpkins out on the porch, cross these plumbing tasks off your list to avoid any horror stories this fall!

Inspect Your Water Heater

Water heaters are essential to our daily lives. We rely on them to take showers, wash dishes, and do our laundry. It’s especially important as the weather gets cooler that your water heater is working at maximum performance. Before the weather gets too cold, take a look at your water heater and see if it needs any TLC this season. A few problems you should be on the lookout for are:

  • A leaking or cracked tank
  • Malfunctioning pilot light
  • Rust

If you notice any of these issues, Cardinal Plumbing & Electric will be right over to professionally repair your water heater.

Check for Leaks

Throughout summer, you probably spent most of your time outside and enjoying the warm weather as much as you could. While you were doing this, you might have been putting off some indoor plumbing issues that you were waiting to handle until the weather cooled down, such as a dripping faucet. Although it might seem minor, a dripping faucet or leaking pipe can cause your water bill to skyrocket before you even know it.

Go around your house and check your faucets and pipes for any noticeable leaks. Cardinal Plumbing & Electric can locate and repair leaks before they turn into an even bigger problem.

Turn Off Your Outdoor Hoses

While your outdoor hoses and sprinklers are very helpful during summer, you don’t really need to use them in the fall and winter months. If hoses are left connected when the weather is cold, the water inside of them can freeze in the pipe. To avoid this issue, disconnect your outdoor hoses and store them in a dry area. Once the hose is disconnected, you should also check the faucet for any dripping water or leaks.

Insulate Your Pipes

Before you bundle up in your coats this season, take care of your pipes! The cold weather can wreak havoc on your pipes if they’re exposed and can cause them to freeze overnight. Pipe insulation is the best thing you can do to keep your pipes from freezing and causing damage to your home.

Check Your Sump Pump

Your sump pump is most likely something you tend to forget about, but it’s an important part of your plumbing system as it prevents water from pooling and potentially flooding your basement. Check your sump pump’s discharge line and make sure it’s clear of any debris. If you notice an issue with the line, it’s time to give our team a call at (705) 230-3037.

Schedule a Maintenance Appointment

If you’re not familiar with your home’s plumbing system and don’t know where to start, it never hurts to schedule a maintenance appointment with Cardinal Plumbing & Electric. Properly maintaining your plumbing system is the best way to make sure you don’t run into any plumbing nightmares.
